Review - Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Equipment

Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Kit
Life In The Saddle, whether it is bike racing or long-haul bicycle touring, can always present unexpected challenges. There are times when you're left in need of a good "get me home repair"; or in the worst case, the need to signal for help. I came across the Gerber Bear Grylls Survival range whilst looking for kit for my 'Coasts and Cols' tour; it instantly appealed as a set of products that would be perfect for the 'back-and-beyond' bikepacker or cycle tourist.

The Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Multitool

This plier multitool would be a great 'Every Ride Carry' for any adventurous cyclist. It features a plethora of tools, which could get you out of many a tight spot.

The pliers, with their integrated cable cutters, are ideal for jobs like brake pad and cable changes; and they're spring loaded, so they are easy to operate one-handed. The blade options come in the form of a serrated blade, saw and a standard knife blade; all of which are useful for jobs like cutting webbing straps, tent guys or make-shift washing lines. Then there are also bottle openers, can openers, screwdrivers and scissors; all of which can be invaluable for camp craft and bike repairs. I can think of opportunities when I could use all of the tools on the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Tool; both on and off the bike.

The Bear Grylls Basic Survival Kit

There can be times on any outdoor venture when things go wrong. You might get injured on the side of a mountain. You might run out of food and water. You might need to camp in a undesirable location. The Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival kit is a set of tools that I hope I never have need for; but which could be invaluable if an unfortunate situation arose.

The kit contains a collection of equipment that can enable you to carry out quite advanced bush craft, as well as basic survival skills. There is tinder and a fire-starter, should you need to create a warning signal. There is an emergency whistle for attracting attention. There is a trip wire, should you fancy your chances at snaring a rabbit. There is a length of para-cord, for lashing and fastening. Finally, there is a superb little Gerber knife, which is always a must in a survival situation. The whole kit is housed in a neat nylon pouch, which has land to air signalling instructions sewn on the back.

Both the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Tool and the Basic Survival Pack are great pieces of kit; featuring quality components, to create a tool set that is reliable and a pleasure to use.

Wherever you might be travelling on your next tour or back-and-beyond ride, this kit from Gerber is well worth adding to your carry.
